An end shield looks like a simple disc. It is not. It carries the bearing or bush seat, and if that seat is off by a fraction the rotor sits crooked, the motor draws more current, runs hot and comes back to you as a complaint.
We machine the seat square and hold the bore to tolerance, and we gauge across the lot rather than checking a sample. That is the whole reason assemblers buy end shields from a motor manufacturer instead of a trader.
